Emsella & Pelvic Floor Strength in the Postpartum
Postpartum & Pelvic Floor Strength- A Journey with the Emsella
As incredibly supportive as my healthcare team were with the birth of my babies, for reasons beyond my comprehension, discussion about pelvic floor strength seemed to simply ‘slip through the cracks’.
Hi, I am Cat, a mum to two beautiful little boys who are both under two and a half. During my first pregnancy, I received a hand out on ‘Kegals’. To be 100% honest, I actually had absolutely no idea whether I was doing them right. There wasn’t a point of reference for my brain to evaluate efficacy. During my second pregnancy, I spent most of my time in survival mode, chasing after my oldest; a wild spirited red head. During the postpartum itself, I think I was probably more concerned with finding myself a mum, rather than doing follow up Kegal exercises. My babies with both birthed vaginally at approximately 42 weeks. I also needed forceps with the birth of my oldest.
With pregnancy and birth in mind, I definitely think that there has been some strain on my pelvic floor muscles over the last couple of years. I am 11 months into my second postpartum and I still feel that my posture still hasn’t quite retuned to my pre-pregnant state. There’s urgency empty my bladder. Running and jumping on a trampoline at the park feels a little out of reach at the moment.
I could definitely do with some help! I am going to have a course of treatments using the Emsella chair over the coming weeks and write about my experience for anyone that might be curious.
My goals and expectations are nothing less than high.
I want to re-introduce running into my routine
I am after better posture and more core stability
I want to be able to really connect with my pelvic floor + abdominal muscles and squeeze them when I work out
I want to jump on the trampoline without embarrassment of leaking
I want less urgency to empty my bladder, including during the night
I want confidence in my body’s ability to get stronger
I am excited to start my journey with the Emsella over the coming weeks. The clinical recommendation (based on research), is that I have 6 sessions over the course of 3 weeks. Pelvic floor continues to strengthen for months afterwards and peak benefit is reached at three months.
